Wedding cost per guest is your total wedding budget divided by your guest count. It is not a perfect forecast for every additional guest, but it is one of the clearest numbers for understanding the economics of your plan.
The formula is simple
Total wedding budget ÷ guest count = cost per guest. A $35,000 wedding for 100 guests is $350 per guest. The number becomes useful when the guest list grows, a venue minimum changes, or you compare two plans with very different headcounts.
Not every cost changes with every guest
Some costs are relatively fixed: photography coverage, a DJ, your attire, or the ceremony officiant. Other categories often scale with the guest list: food, beverages, rentals, stationery, favors, transportation, staffing, and sometimes venue fees.

Use cost per guest as a decision signal
If adding 25 people implies several thousand dollars of additional spending, you can decide whether that tradeoff is worth it before the invitation list becomes emotionally locked. The goal is not to reduce people to a price tag. It is to make the budget consequence visible.
Track the number as estimates become contracts
Your early cost per guest may be based on a rough total. Recalculate after major contracts are signed and again after final headcount. A rising number can signal upgrades, hidden fees, or categories that were under-budgeted at the start.
